This exquisite miniature portrait by William Prewitt captures the likeness of Sir William Wyndham, 3rd Baronet, who served as Secretary of War and Chancellor of the Exchequer during the reign of Queen Anne. A pupil of the great German miniature painter Christin Friedrich Zincke, Prewitt was a highly popular portraitist in his day, celebrated for his subtle use of color and brilliant palette. This is an exceptional example of his highly detailed work, and it was once exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum (London) from 1928 to 1965. Today, other examples of Prewitt's work can be found there, as well as at the Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge).
