Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor (1608-1657) and his wife Maria Anna of Spain are captured in this rare double-sided miniature portrait. Ferdinand III succeeded his father as Holy Roman Emperor in 1637 and is credited with bringing an end to the Thirty Years' War in 1648 with the Peace of Westphalia. He married Maria Anna of Spain, the daughter of Phllip III of Spain, in 1631. Though arranged, it is believed that the couple was very much in love, and Anna gave birth to six children before her untimely death in 1646. This portrait, capturing the faces of both Ferdinand III and his bride, was likely created on the occasion of the marriage.
