William I, Prince of Orange and Count of Nassau, is captured in this exceptional miniature portrait. Also known as William the Silent for his taciturn disposition, William is regarded as a national hero in the Netherlands. Though German by birth, he led the revolt of the Low Countries against the Spanish Habsburgs in the mid-16th century that started the Eighty Years' War. His actions as leader of the Dutch rebellion led to the creation of the independent republic of the United Provinces. To this day, he is celebrated in the Netherlands as the Father of the Fatherland. Very few portraits of the legendary leader are known to still exist, making this miniature extraordinarily precious.
