An incredible example of American clockmaking, this Tiffany & Co. mahogany and gilt bronze mantel clock is a shining example of the firm's outstanding artistry in decorative metalwork. The timepiece is embellished with chased designs in a Moorish motif, including repeating trefoil patterns, sunburst engravings on each dial, Corinthian capitals and a domed topper with onion finials. Four dials on the clock's face display the time, chime control, speed and chime selection while the clock itself runs with the help of three double fusee-driven barrels. Additionally, it is fitted with a rare and complex alternating Westminster/Whittington quarter-chiming movement created by master clockmaker Joseph Lindauer for Tiffany & Co. in 1882.

Lindauer served as director of Tiffany & Co.'s clock department from 1865-1895 during which the firm created some of their most exquisite decorative objects. The art of Persia and Turkey was a continuing influence on the firm's output throughout this time. While in his twenties, Louis Comfort Tiffany traveled widely in Europe and visited Spain, North Africa and the Middle East where he developed an interest in the native architecture and ornament, Romanesque and Moorish art and Japanese ceramics. This clock perfectly represents Tiffany's artistic creativity and technical innovation that characterized the firm's output under Lindauer's direction.

Inscribed "Tiffany & Co." on clock face.
