This rare and beautiful pair of urns were crafted by Wedgwood in the firm’s famous pale “Wedgwood blue” jasperware so prized by collectors and connoisseurs alike. Bearing a shape recalling Ancient Greek pottery, Neoclassical scenes of maidens outfitted in togas alongside swags of flowers and stiff leaves applied in ornamental relief decorate these identical urns. The firm’s characteristically unglazed matte “biscuit” stoneware finish was first developed in a spectrum of colors by Wedgwood founder Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s. However, the pale blue hue exhibited in these pieces was the firm’s most popular ever produced, earning itself the nickname “Wedgwood blue.”
