Outstanding decoration adorns this diminutive Palais Royal mother-of-pearl box, formed into a charming coquille shape. It is a wonderful demonstration of French Empire decorative arts, combining the classical forms and ornamentation of the Louis XVI period with the imperial symbols of Napoléon’s reign. The box features marvelously cast doré bronze accents, including swans that serve as its feet — a symbol of Empress Josephine. The addition of exquisite engraving on the mother-of-pearl lid makes this an expressive and skillfully crafted piece.
