The Passover seder is the subject of this monumental work by the Israeli painter Yossi Rosenstein. The artist is renowned for his artistic interpretation of biblical tales on canvas, and this work offers a wholly unique interpretation of this religious ritual. The Passover is a highly important holiday in the Jewish faith, celebrating the escape of the Israelites from the hands of the Egyptians who had enslaved them. Today, the holiday culminates in the Passover seder, a special meal during which the tale of Moses and the Exodus from Egypt is retold.

Rosenstein brilliantly interprets the tradition in this work, which captures both the flight of the Israelites in the background and a table laid with the seder meal in the foreground. The wine and food typically associated with the event are prominently featured on the tablescape, while the meal goers hold the religious text, the Haggadah, which tells the story of the Exodus. Reading the Haggadah at the Seder table is a fulfillment of the mitzvah to each Jew to "tell your children" the story from the Book of Exodus — a commandment that is beautifully rendered here.

Rosenstein was born in Jerusalem in 1950, and he has devoted his career to developing a new genre of Jewish art that resonates across faiths and doctrines. Drawing upon biblical stories and themes, the painter creates works that convey a deep sense of emotion that is universal. Despite the fact that he is self-taught, his works display a technical acuity and veracity that brings his narratives to life. He has exhibited extensively throughout his career; his first solo exhibition was held in Tel Aviv in 1973, and since then he has shown his works around the globe.
