This monumentally rare Patek Philippe Nautilus watch is truly the pinnacle of luxury sports watches. Originally created by visionary watchmaker Gérald Genta in 1976, the 5712 model was launched in 2006 in celebration of Nautilus’ 30th anniversary. Genta designed over 100,000 watches, including the iconic Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. Inspired by a transatlantic ship, the design of the Nautilus is meant to suggest a porthole, with rounded octagonal edges and sides that resemble hinges. While now available in other metals, steel remains the most coveted material for this watch, and the designation of “1A-001” indicates this watch is the original steel/steel combination. This impressive timepiece is in unworn condition and comes with a full kit including box, outer box, registration, papers, literature and hang tag.

It is difficult to overstate the beauty and craftsmanship of this watch. The case and bracelet are crafted of stainless steel with a double-fold clasp and integrated steel links progressing up to join the case. The center links are polished while the outer links are matte, and this contrasting level of polish gives the bracelet incredible shine and texture. The face possesses a highly desirable sunburst pattern, blue at the center and blackening towards the edges. A date display is set at the 7 o’clock position with sub-dials displaying moon phase and power reserve indicators. Additionally, the seconds are displayed on a sub-seconds hand at 4:30. Water-resistant up to 60 meters with a 48-hour power reserve, a caliber 240 automatic movement ensures the highest precision timekeeping.

The exposed movement on the back of this watch is equally impressive. A gold micro-rotor makes the watch incredibly thin, only 8.5mm, which allows it to sit elegantly and comfortably on the wrist. The movement is intricately decorated with Côtes de Genève and perlage, while every edge is beveled by hand for the smoothest finish. Because Patek Philippe places such a strong emphasis on quality and craftsmanship, a limited number of these watches exist, and they are nearly impossible to find today, especially in this condition. The rarity of this watch, combined with its pristine condition and complete kit, make it an unparalleled find in the world of luxury timepieces.
