Paul Storr was the most sought-after silversmith of the early 19th century, with even royal patrons often having to wait for their commissions. He was renowned for his meticulous craftsmanship and unique designs, and this lavish egg cruet epitomizes his unparalleled virtuoso. Adorned with detailed foliate and Egyptian-inspired motifs, this cruet and its accompanying six egg cups are stunning examples of Storr's prowess.

By the 18th century, boiled eggs were a common breakfast staple, and they were often brought to the table in decorated frames like this one that would carry multiple egg cups. This magnificent example by Storr is particularly elaborate, with its six supporting stakes formed of beautifully entwined serpents and outstretched bird wings. At its center, tied reeds rise gracefully into a budding flower to create a one-of-a-kind handle design. On the six cups, tendrils, shells and scrolls are chased elegantly around the surface, and the interiors are gilt to protect the silver from the egg yolks. The spoons, made by silversmith Jacob Levi, are monogrammed with a K.

Similar cruets by Paul Storr are held in prestigious institutions such as the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Storr’s works remain some of the most highly valued and influential in the history of decorative arts. This remarkable work was once part of the iconic Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
