Paysage d'été boisé
(Wooded Summer Landscape

Signed and dated "G. Cariot / 1917" (lower right)
Oil on canvas

Vibrant color is used to brilliant effect in this oil on canvas by the French painter Gustave Cariot. The quaint landscape, complete with rolling hills and lush foliage, is rendered in a bold palette with lively brushwork that embodies the mature style of this Post-Impressionist artist. The style is purely French modernism as Cariot skillfully plays with color and light, and the result is a lively and engaging work that displays the luminosity and perspective of his finest compositions.

Gustave Cariot was born in 1872 in Périgny-sur-Yerres near Paris but grew up in the arts district of Marais. The son of a luggage maker, he originally carried out an apprenticeship with his father, though he spent much of his free time studying art and design. Entirely self-taught, Cariot never received formal training, but he was heavily influenced by the work of the Impressionists, and particularly Claude Monet.

His earliest works take as their subject Paris and the French countryside, as Cariot experimented with the effects of light and color at different times of day. His style soon incorporated elements of the Neo-Impressionists, though he himself shunned the title. His works were often featured in the exhibitions of the prestigious Société des Artistes Indépendants and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, as well as the Galerie Durand-Ruel in Paris. After World War I, he spent much of his time in Germany, painting the German landscape but maintaining his uniquely French style.
