The great French Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir penned this fascinating letter to an unknown recipient who had given the painter a favorite bottle of wine. In the hand-signed note, the legendary artist thanks the gentleman for the gift, writing in French, "Sir, I accept your offer with pleasure. I have a passion for this wine so difficult to find. And although I don't have the pleasure to know you, I will drink some to your health. Receive sir, my thanks and my regards." He then signs and locates the note, "Renoir, in Paris, 43 Caulincourt Street, 18th Arrondissements."

Letters such as this provide a unique and intimate glimpse into the life and interests of history's greatest creative minds, revealing their humanity expressed in pen and ink. Renoir's letter, displayed here alongside a photo of the artist, exposes the man behind the canvas. Written correspondence from artists is extraordinarily precious and rarely discovered in such excellent condition.
