Each panel of this 19th-century Italian box is meticulously crafted using a combination of traditional pietre dure techniques. The panels are formed from polished marble and minerals, with each element painstakingly matched for color, size and placement in order to create the intricate images set into the box's form. The top and side panels of the box each depict a different floral bouquet set against a black background to dramatic effect, emphasizing the delicate artistry of these luxury pieces. The pietre dure panels are mounted in chased and repousséd gilt bronze covered in scrollwork and foliate flourishes.

The art of pietre dure requires that fine marbles and stones be inlaid into a stone base. By using stone specimens of varying color, the artisan can create patterns and pictures in much the same manner as a mosaic. The technique was expensive, requiring precious materials and highly skilled craftsmen. As a result, pietre dure works such as this were available only to the wealthiest Europeans, and they found favor among the surge of affluent tourists making their requisite Grand Tour across Europe during the 19th century.
