Wine and Music

Pietre dure

Composed by renowned Italian artist Antonio Sandrini, this incredible Florentine pietre dure is made up of a show-stopping variety of hardstones set in a parcel-gilt ebonized wood frame to create a magnificent narrative scene. The hardstones are artfully arranged to recreate the composition of a painting by Francesco Vinea entitled Wine and Music. Each hardstone piece was carefully chosen for both its color and pattern to perfectly match the colorful details and shading of the original painted composition. The result is a breathtaking, even painterly, work composed of the finest hardstone materials available.

Antonio Sandrini was the head of one of the most accomplished workshops in Florentine mosaic in the second half of the 19th century. Together with his brothers Carlo and Felice, he built the workshop’s reputation and they frequently exhibited their remarkable works in the Universal Exhibitions, receiving accolades in the Paris, London, Milan and even Philadelphia exhibitions. Similar pietre dure works from Sandrini are held in prestigious museum collections including a comparable work on view at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
