The regal visage of Louis XVIII, King of France, is rendered in exquisite detail on this rare lifetime portrait miniature. A monarch of the House of Bourbon, Louis XVIII ruled as King of France from 1814 to 1824, but was briefly deposed in 1815 during a period known simply as the Hundred Days. The king ascended to his throne after spending a long twenty-three years in Prussia in exile following the French Revolution and subsequent rule of Emperor Napoleon I. He enjoyed a decade as King of France, attempting to restore order in war-torn France by advocating for compromise between the old and new orders. He would be the last French monarch to die while still ruling, succumbing to illness in 1824.

This remarkably detailed miniature, captured in the last years of the King’s life, depicts him as a glorified military ruler. From the golden epaulettes on his indigo jacket to the military star-shaped medals, no detail on the monarch’s costume has been overlooked. Displaying all of the nuances one would expect from a much larger work, this rare portrait is truly a miniature masterpiece.
