Credited with shaping the modern presidency, Theodore Roosevelt was one of the most popular and loved of all United States' presidents. He significantly expanded the influence and power of the executive office, and he was also the first president to effectively use the media in order to expose injustices and enact social reform. Imhof's Portrait of Theodore Roosevelt aptly captures that resolute spirit and powerful presence, as he stands stoic amid symbols of patriotism.
Born in Brooklyn, New York in the late 19th century, Joseph Adam Imhof taught himself lithography before moving to pursue four years of formal artistic training in Europe in 1891. Spending time in Brussels, Paris, Munich and Antwerp, the young artist undertook several apprenticeships, sketching and painting under the tutelage of talented European illustrators and painters. Also well known for his lithographs, photographs and color prints of Native Americans, Imhof spent his later years in Taos, New Mexico. Today, his artworks reside in the famed American art collections of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa and the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe.
