This exceptional treasure is the original binnacle from Her Majesty's yacht, Victoria and Albert. She was quite famous as the first British royal yacht to be steam-propelled. The binnacle was a crucial navigational instrument that housed the ship's floating compass. Constructed from Cuban mahogany and brass, it exemplifies the high standards of the workmanship that went into the Royal Yacht.

As the heart of a ship's navigation, the binnacle ensured that the vessel stayed on course. This particular binnacle, predating the advent of electric lighting, features a reservoir designed to hold a nightlight, allowing the compass to remain illuminated during nighttime voyages. Ingeniously crafted night plates cover the open glass, creating a reflective surface that enables the helmsman to steer accurately even in the darkest conditions.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert extensively used the Victoria and Albert, undertaking more than twenty voyages to various ports across the United Kingdom and making several visits to the European continent. In 1854, the yacht was renamed Osborne in honor of Queen Victoria's country residence on the Isle of Wight. After years of faithful service, the yacht was decommissioned in 1867 and dismantled the following year.

The compass paper bears the inscription "Borraige, Whitehaven," from the northwest of England. The binnacle itself is inscribed with "Chislett, Tower Hill, London," a mark of its maker, who was awarded the official warrant for scientific instruments in 1843, further attesting to the quality and authenticity of this remarkable piece. The side is marked: "Her Majesty’s Yacht Osborne," a later edition to the binnacle when the yacht was renamed in 1854.

This extraordinary piece of royal and maritime history is completely fresh to the market. Mounted on original teak decking, it is in near-perfect condition and makes a commanding presence.
