An incredible scientific relic, this fascinating and large meteorite was found in the high desert just under the Sierra Nevada Mountains. California has proved to be rich meteorite grounds, and possible impact centers, the oldest dating back over 35 million years, have been located. The vast majority of meteorite finds occur in the southern portion of the state, where the present specimen originated. This area is filled with dry, ancient lake beds that formed deserts. Meteorites that land in these vast areas of semi-arid land are perfect for locating these celestial wonders since they often remain visible yet undisturbed from their original impact condition.

Relics from the formation of our solar system, the importance of meteorites to the scientific community can not be underestimated. Rocks and metals on Earth have been exposed to geological forces over millions of years. Meteorites, on the other hand, have not, and are largely the very same as when the solar system came to be, providing scientists with a window into the birth of both our planet and the universe.
