Poole Silver Company
Early 20th Century
This elegant silverplated tray by the Poole Silver Company reflects the grandeur of American design at the turn of the 20th century. Cast with two symmetrical Baroque-inspired handles adorned with grape clusters, vine leaves and scrolling cartouches, the tray embodies the era's preference for ornate and expressive motifs. Such trays were prized as status symbols in affluent homes, used in lavish entertaining and often left on display to reflect the owner's taste and refinement.
The tray's surface is beautifully adorned with engravings, culminating in a central medallion filled with finely executed floral and foliate motifs framed by classic C-scroll borders. Raised on four shell scroll feet, the composition blends Rococo exuberance with American craftsmanship.
The work was created by the Poole Silver Company of Taunton, Massachusetts, which opened in 1895. Renowned for its early innovations in electroplating, Poole quickly became a leader in American silver manufacture. This tray represents Poole’s mastery of both aesthetic design and technical innovation at the turn of the century. Additionally, this tray was a part of the iconic Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
