This exceptionally rare traveler's cane is topped by a brass knob handle that rotates the shaft open to reveal an interior figure of St. Christopher. He is shown holding a small child in reference to his most famous legend, which tells that he carried a child across a river. Once safely across, the child identified himself as Jesus Christ, telling Christopher that he had just carried the weight of the world to safety. St. Christopher became one of the most popular patron saints for travelers in the Middle Ages and remains a popular Christian icon today.
