Tea

Signed "G D Leslie" (lower right)
Oil on canvas

This stunning oil on canvas by esteemed British artist George Dunlop Leslie captures a young woman offering hot tea from across a table, engaging the viewer with her alluring gaze. Painted during the height of his successful career at the end of the 19th century, Tea renders the nostalgia for a bygone era in brilliant lifelike detail.

The fresh-faced woman is a vision from the beginning of the 19th century, with her gown and mop-cap adorned in the white ruffles of the early Victorian period. She has placed a bushel of flowers in her bosom and waits to serve her companion for tea from her fine blue and white porcelain set. With its charming subject and virtuosic depiction of light and vivid color, this composition exemplifies George Dunlop Leslie at his best. It was rightly exhibited at the Royal Academy of London in 1894.

George Dunlop Leslie was the son of one of the pioneers of Victorian genre painting, Charles Robert Leslie. From early in his career, George Dunlop Leslie began exhibiting at the Royal Academy, gaining acclaim for his magnificent classical works such as Nausicaa and her Maids shown in 1871. He was an important member of the London group known as the St. John's Wood Clique, who took a fresh approach to historical subjects. During the 1870s and 1880s, Leslie also distinguished himself by exploring the domestic sphere in his works, showing women and children in more light-hearted everyday settings. This composition, Tea, hails from the end of the century when his style was well-established, highly acclaimed and in fashion.
