Oil on canvas
This exceptional oil on canvas by French artist Marcel Brunery offers a rich and exuberant glimpse into the life of a clergyman. Such paintings exposing the worldly wealth enjoyed by the high-ranking members of the Church would have come with severe legal punishment if they had been executed at an earlier period, but during this era of French history, patience and trust in the clergy were waning, making such comical depictions not only acceptable but greatly desirable. Bruney, along with his contemporaries Georges Croegaert and Jehan Georges Vibert, was among the leading painters of this sought-after genre that became known as Cardinal paintings.
The present work reveals Brunery’s remarkable talent for capturing a single moment in time on canvas, rich with sumptuous detail and luxurious texture. Entitled Tea with the Bishop, the painting displays a wonderful sense of realism, exhibiting Brunery’s skill for rendering texture, light, shadow and detail with each and every brushstroke. For over a century, his works have been distinguished by his uncanny gift for meticulous workmanship and beloved for their intrinsic humor and charm.
Born in Paris in 1893, Brunery was part of a long lineage of artists. His father, François Brunery, was also a renowned painter in the Cardinal genre, and Marcel followed in his footsteps, excelling in the portrayal of cardinals at leisure. Brunery exhibited at Société des Artistes Indépendants in 1935 and he enjoyed significant success during his lifetime.
