A crisp, brilliant star shines brightly at the center of this 9.61-carat oval cabochon star ruby. The rare purplish-red gemstone is certified by C. Dunaigre of Switzerland to be free of heat treatment and of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) origin. The star ruby’s trademark six-pointed star is the result of a phenomenon called asterism. This occurs when tiny needle-like titanium dioxide, or rutile fibers, form within the ruby, creating a pattern that appears to be the rays of a star when viewed under a single, concentrated light source.

The stone is featured in a platinum setting by the celebrated Oscar Heyman. Six round Paraiba tourmalines totaling 0.30 carat and six oval diamonds totaling 1.37 carats perfectly complement its purplish-red hue.
