Pastel on card

Composed by French painter H. Claude Pissarro, this pastel offers an impressionistic perspective of a picturesque forest trail in the Vère River valley in southern France. Building upon the legacy of his grandfather, the great Impressionist Camille Pissarro, the work displays a careful examination of light and color, especially in the artist’s treatment of the soft, dappled sunshine filtering through the tree canopy. With its colorful, feathery brushstrokes, the enchanting scene exudes the lightness and vitality of Pissarro’s renowned oeuvre.

The grandson of Camille Pissarro and son of painter Paulemile Pissarro, Pissarro seemed destined to pick up the paintbrush, and he did so at a young age. Primarily taught by his father, he exhibited his first works at the young age of 14, and later studied in Paris at the École du Musée du Louvre and École Normale Supérieur. Like many of his family predecessors, the scope of his work and talent is vast, ranging from engraving to lithography, from publishing to painting. His reputation as a painter quickly spread, resulting in a White House commission in 1959 to paint the portrait of President Eisenhower. While his style has evolved throughout his career, he is best known for his brightly colored Impressionist works like the present piece, which have been exhibited around the world since 1985 and are highly collected.

This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
