The energy and joie de vivre of Venice has been captured in this vibrant oil on canvas by the painter Federico del Campo. The Peruvian master traveled to Italy early in his life, eventually devoting his career to the vedute, composing scenes of Venice’s most famous monuments and vibrant streets. Rather than a sweeping cityscape, in this particular oil del Campo treats the viewer to a more intimate corner of Venice. Traditionally dressed Italian peasants are captured on the steps of their homes, minding their children or tending to their chores. The earthly tones of the street and its buildings are beautifully contrasted against the azure blue of the Italian sky. Del Campo imparts his distinctive attention to atmosphere and detail in the oil on canvas, which celebrates the culture and Old World beauty of this legendary Italian city.

Born in Lima, del Campo studied in Madrid with Lorenzo Valles (1830-1910), an artist who himself worked a great deal in Italy. Del Campo exhibited his Venetian scenes at the Paris Salon in 1880 and at the Madrid Art Exhibition of 1881, after traveling extensively throughout Italy for many years. The main body of del Campo's work consists of Venetian views demonstrating a vivid palette, a comprehensive understanding of his subject and an extraordinary degree of technical mastery. His paintings are regarded among the greatest renderings of the Venetian landscape and are sought by collectors around the world.
