Stockwell
Hallmarked London, 1872-1873

Designed as a pair of witty Victorian smoking-table objects, these silver novelty carriages combine function with playful form. One cart serves as a fire-wagon table lighter with a covered spirit reservoir and wick, while its companion functions as an ash receiver, cigar or cigarette stand and spill holder. The fire-wagon design is especially clever: it quite literally carries the flame.

Silver-rimmed artillery wheels allow the carriages to be rolled across the table, adding an exciting element to the after-dinner smoking ritual as lighter and accessories could be passed between guests. An upright spill or match cylinder and gilt receiver complete the miniature working forms, reflecting the Victorian taste for novelty silver that was both useful and amusing.

E. H. Stockwell was known for inventive novelty silver, including whimsical tablewares and modeled objects. This pair is a fine example of that tradition, combining skilled silverwork with a clever sense of humor.
M.S.
