Victorian Turquoise Snake Necklace

The bold blue hue of turquoise accentuates the slithering serpent in this statement-making Victorian necklace. The cabochon turquoise gems along the body are presented in a raised bezel setting, evoking the scaly skin of a snake while garnets and diamonds add character to the creature's face. Set in silver and 19.7K yellow gold.

Serpents and snakes were highly fashionable during the mid to late-19th century, appearing in necklaces, brooches, pendants and bracelets. Prince Albert is considered responsible for the trend, after proposing to Queen Victoria with an engagement ring that took the form of a snake with its tail in its mouth, a motif seen in the present necklace. This design was considered a symbol of love eternal and it remains a popular jewelry motif today.
