Cariot 1932" (lower right)
Oil on canvas

Celebrated French Post-Impressionist Gustave Cariot masterfully captures the vibrancy and serenity of the Rhine Valley in this luminous composition. A rich tapestry of color fills the foreground, where a field of wildflowers bursts into bloom, leading the viewer’s eye toward a village nestled amid lush greenery. Past the delicate trees, charming rooftops emerge from the foliage, surrounding a church. A house perched atop a hill presides over the landscape while rolling, densely wooded hills provide a picturesque backdrop.

Cariot’s distinctive technique—marked by precise, small touches of color—imbues the work with texture and light, lending it an almost photographic clarity while preserving the ethereal beauty of Impressionism. His meticulous attention to detail reflects his deep appreciation for nature’s subtleties. With its harmonious balance of color, light and form, this pastoral scene stands as a testament to Cariot’s ability to capture the tranquility of the countryside.

Gustave Cariot was born in 1872 in Périgny-sur-Yerres but grew up in the arts district of Le Marais in Paris. The son of a luggage maker, he originally carried out an apprenticeship with his father, though he spent much of his free time studying art and design. Entirely self-taught, Cariot never received formal training, but he was heavily influenced by the work of the Impressionists, particularly Claude Monet. Despite this, Cariot’s works favored structure over the looser brushstrokes of Monet.

His earliest works take Paris and the French countryside as their subjects, as Cariot experimented with the effects of light and color at different times of the day. His style soon incorporated elements of the Neo-Impressionists, including the Divisionists and Pointillists, though he himself shunned the title. He was a member of the prestigious Société des Artistes Indépendants and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, exhibiting frequently in their shows, as well as at the Galeries Durand-Ruel in Paris, until he died in 1950.

Dated 1932

This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Gustave Cariot being prepared by Norbert and Tess Saffar

Canvas: 21 3/8" high x 25" wide (54.29 x 63.50 cm)
Frame: 28 2/4" high x 32 1/4" wide x 1 7/8" deep (73.03 x 81.92 x 4.57 cm)

Provenance:
Private Collection
M.S.
