Oil on canvas
The extraordinary landscape of the French Riviera is presented in bright, fresh color in this oil on canvas by Belgian artist Paul Leduc. Entitled Vue panoramique de Saint-Tropez, the work captures Saint-Tropez and the shimmering sea from a high vantage point, framed by a small grove of trees. The landscape is distinctly modern, bringing an post-impressionistic style to the brink of colorful abstraction and achieving a wonderful atmospheric quality. Masterfully rendered with a studied use of complementary colors, rich textures and dynamic brushstrokes, this composition exemplifies Leduc’s artistic virtuosity.
Paul Leduc began his artistic studies under Joseph Coosemans in Tervueren before attending the Mons Academy under Antoine Bourlard. He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp with Albert Baertsoen. He traveled across Europe, finding inspiration in the landscapes and cityscapes of Belgium, France, Italy and more. He is best known for his luminous, painterly landscapes such as this.
