The biblical tale of the Pharaoh's Dreams from Genesis 41 is the subject of this Parian porcelain figural group by Wedgwood. Known as The Interpretation, the group is based on a model by the well-known sculptor William Beattie, who was hired by Wedgwood to design four Old Testament figural groups. The present example captures Joseph standing before the Pharaoh while interpreting his dream; to the left sits Asenathm, the daughter of the Egyptian priest Potiphera. Another example of the group is in the Birmingham Museum of Art, while other Old Testament groups designed by Beattie for Wedgwood are in the Brooklyn Museum (New York), Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences (New South Wales, Australia) and the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
