Written on 10 Downing Street stationery during his second term as prime minister, the correspondence celebrates a distinction that recognized his accomplishments as both a historian and an orator. Churchill’s 1953 Nobel Prize in Literature honored the command of language that made him one of the defining voices of the 20th century.

Addressing his recipient affectionately as “My dear Odette,” Churchill also expresses his gratitude for a birthday gift: a case of 1934 champagne. Odette Pol-Roger, the grande dame of one of his favorite Champagne houses, was a cherished friend who sent him a case for his birthday each year. Her earlier gifts had been the favored 1928 vintage; when supplies were exhausted, she switched to 1934, beginning in 1953. Churchill’s appreciation for her “again remembering me in this very agreeable way” gives the exchange its warmth and characteristic charm.

Accompanied by its addressed and postmarked envelope, the letter brings together Churchill’s literary achievement, celebrated taste for champagne and enduring friendship with the woman behind his annual birthday gift. Its direct reference to the Nobel Prize makes it an especially compelling record of a landmark moment in his life.

Frame: 17 7/8" high x 13 7/8" wide x 7/8" deep (45.28 x 35.12 x 2.10 cm)
M.S.
