Winter (The Skaters)

Signed and dated "Orovida 1936-38" (lower left)
Egg tempera on linen

British artist Orovida Pissarro composed this highly lyrical wintertime scene of skaters on the ice. The work is part of the artist's Four Seasons series composed between 1936 and 1938, a period during which she solely painted using her own homemade egg tempera applied in thin, delicate washes. Unlike oil and gouache, egg tempera possesses a distinctive luminosity that is on full display in this large-scale work, which represents the very best of Pissarro's modernist approach. Only 50 of these finished egg-tempura works were ever made, making them extremely rare.

Orovida Pissarro was the only child of Lucien and Esther Pissarro, and the granddaughter of Camille Pissarro. She was the first woman in her legendary family to become an artist, and she initially painted in the impressionist style of her father and grandfather. However, she later turned away from naturalistic painting, instead developing her own distinctive style that brought together elements of Japanese, Chinese, Persian and Indian art. Her rejection of Impressionism reflected her deep desire for independence from the weight of the family legacy.

Her most distinctive works were those produced from 1919 until 1939, during which she used her homemade egg tempera. However, with the onset of WWII and the subsequent lack of available eggs, she turned back to oil painting and a more naturalistic style. In addition to her paintings, Pissarro was also a gifted printmaker, and throughout her career she created many etchings of which both the British and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford have a large collection.
