You Shall Strike the Rock

Signed "Y. Rosenstein" (lower left)
Oil on canvas

Israeli painter Yossi Rosenstein is known for his artistic interpretation of biblical tales on canvas, and this work is exemplary of his output. Hailing from the artist's Exodus series, the work illustrates the verse, "You shall strike the rock and water will come forth from it and the people will drink" (Exodus 17:6). It was a significant moment in the story of Moses, the most important prophet in Judaism who delivered his people from Egyptian slavery. After leading the Jewish people out of Egypt through the Desert of Sin, Moses was guided by the voice of God to strike his staff upon a rock; when he did so, the rock poured forth water, quenching the thirst of his followers.

Rosenstein captures this moment with a sense of awe and drama, depicting a vast waterfall seemingly originating from within the rock itself. Hundreds of refugees look on in awe at the miracle, some raising their arms in adulation, while others kneel by the river's edge for a drink. A sense of surreality permeates the scene, which is rendered with an eye for detail and richness of color that defines the artist's distinctive style.

Rosenstein was born in Jerusalem in 1950, and he has devoted his career to developing a new genre of Jewish art that resonates across faiths and doctrines. Drawing upon biblical stories and themes, the painter creates works that convey a deep sense of emotion that is universal. Despite the fact that he is self-taught, his works display a technical acuity and veracity that brings his narratives to life. He has exhibited extensively throughout his career; his first solo exhibition was held in Tel Aviv in 1973, and since then he has shown his works around the globe.
