Young Girl with a Basket of Flowers

Signed "Ad. Piot" (lower right)
Oil on canvas

Étienne Adolphe Piot's skill as an Academic painter is fully revealed in this charming oil on canvas entitled Young Girl with a Basket of Flowers. Appealing both in its subject matter and its masterful execution, it exemplifies a favorite subject of Academic artists such as Piot, William Adolphe Bouguereau and Léon-Jean-Basile Perrault – the peasant girl. Like his contemporaries, Piot elevates his flower-selling, gypsy subject beyond the harshness of everyday life. He adorns her with beautiful coral and pearl jewelry that complements the blush of youth in her rosy complexion, while her vibrant apron and colorful bouquet are exactingly rendered. The composition in its entirety boasts exceptionally luminous coloration, a distinctive hallmark of Piot’s work and of the French Academy.

Born in Digoin, France, in 1825, Étienne Adolphe Piot moved to Paris early in his career in order to study under Léon Cogniet, a French history and portrait painter. He began exhibiting at the French Salon in 1850, where for the next 20 years he primarily exhibited portraits of female patrons. It was not until around 1870 when he began to pursue and exhibit subjects outside of portraiture, and some of his finest works come from this period, the present included. His elegant, aesthetic depictions of women and peasant children made him a favorite at the Salon, where he exhibited for his entire career until 1909.
