This exceptional music box, doubling as a jewelry box, showcases meticulous carving that exemplifies the pinnacle of Black Forest craftsmanship. The intricate carvings depict a traditional Black Forest house adorned with majestic stonework, windows, shutters, staircases and ornate decorative designs. The beautifully decorated roof opens to reveal a lined interior of luxurious purple that is ideal for storing one's most prized jewelry. Lifting the lid also activates the music box housed within the base, a key-wound Swiss, Geneva movement that remains in fine condition and plays six songs, listed on the interior in French. These songs include waltzes and marches that sweetly serenade the opener. The mechanism can be wound from the underside. The interior is also marked with the Swiss flag and the mark of an Eagle flag.

The wood carving industry of Brienz, Switzerland emerged in the early 19th century, and Swiss Black Forest carvings quickly became world-renowned for their quality and craftsmanship. Black Forest carvings were spotlighted at several international exhibitions, including the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 and the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900, and these delightful carvings remain in high demand.
