Carved during Egypt's 19th Dynasty (circa 1291–1185 BC)—an era of extraordinary artistic ambition under Ramesses II, the Pharaoh of Moses and the Exodus—this exceptional limestone stela was crafted to honor an Egyptian official's ancestors. Intact stelae of this scale are exceptionally rare, and this great treasure comes with its complete key that decodes every symbol.
The beautiful design shows a powerful protective force for an ancestor entering the afterlife. At the top, the shen-ring, a cosmic symbol encompassing all that falls within the sun's path, is accompanied by water ripples and a bowl. Anubis reclines atop a shrine, and the four Sons of Horus—Duamutef, Hapy, Qebehsenuef and Amset—appear as jackal, baboon, falcon and human-headed figures, each a guardian of the ancestor. Osiris, judge of the Netherworld, stands alongside Nephthys, the god's sister, and Isis, great mistress of the sky.
Comparable examples are held in the permanent collections of the world's most esteemed institutions, among them the British Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Princeton University Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
