A piece of historical significance, this bronze fragment comes from the frieze of the Colonne de Juillet or July Column at the Place de la Bastille in Paris. Designed by French architect Jean-Antoine Alavoine for a commission from Louis Philippe I of France, the column was erected in Place de la Bastille in 1840 to commemorate the Revolution of 1830. A piece of historical significance, this bronze fragment comes from the frieze of the Colonne de Juillet or July Column at the Place de la Bastille in Paris. Designed by French architect Jean-Antoine Alavoine for a commission from Louis Philippe I of France, the column was erected in Place de la Bastille in 1840 to commemorate the Revolution of 1830. The 1830 uprising led to the fall of King Charles X and the ascent of Louis Philippe I, Duke of Orleans to the throne.

In 1871, following the siege of Paris, during fighting between the Paris Commune revolutionaries and the Versailles government troops, several pieces of the bronze frieze fell. These fragments were later recovered and authenticated.

Inscribed "Débris de la colonne de la Bastille, Commune de Paris 18 Mars-28 Mai 1871"

Plaque inscribed "This fragment of the "Colonne de Juillet" is a relic of the Paris Commune of 1871, when radicals attempted to destroy the column at the site of France's most historic revolutions, the Bastille."
