This exquisite imported Dutch silver jewelry box epitomizes 19th-century craftsmanship and opulence. Featuring intricate pierced scroll and rocaille motifs, its hinged lid showcases a central domed panel crowned with a charming squirrel finial. The repoussé front panel depicts a bucolic landscape with three deer framed within an elegant cartouche, while the sides feature boar’s head masks with drop-ring handles. Supported by caryatid stiles terminating in distinctive whorl feet, this jewelry box is as functional as it is decorative, making it a splendid example of Victorian luxury.
The importing and hallmarking process, backed by Thomas Glaser, the London silversmith and sponsor, ensured its silver purity. Notably, the zigzag assay test line visible on the base is a testament to its authenticity. The assay office would remove a small sample of metal in this zigzag pattern to be tested for purity, before receiving its hallmarks.
Thomas Glaser, a prominent London silversmith during the late 19th century, was known for curating exceptional continental silver for the English market. The box's distinctive Dutch influence highlights the interconnectedness of European silversmith traditions during this period. This box exemplifies the fusion of Dutch design sensibilities with English import craftsmanship, offering a tangible link to the fine tastes of Victorian society. This remarkable jewelry box was also part of the iconic Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
