Masterful marquetry and luxurious materials distinguish this fantastic ebony cabinet attributed to the Parisian firm of Hunsinger & Wagner. The most exceptional marquetry of exotic fruitwoods adorns the entire piece, but it is the floral bouquets on the parquetry doors that make a tremendous statement. The detail afforded to the inlay is of the highest caliber and includes foliate designs on the frieze and fluted Corinthian columns, and even tiny insects encircling the bouquets. A beautiful birch veneered interior with a fitted shelf lies behind the ornate doors, and molded drawers with marquetry facades provide additional storage space. Stunning workmanship, in conjunction with such elegant timbers and ivory, culminates in a truly magnificent example of 19th-century French cabinetmaking.

A comparable cabinet by Hunsinger & Wagner can be found in the collection of the Museé d'Orsay, Paris, and is illustrated in Le Mobilier Francais du XIXime Siecle by D. Ledoux-Lebard, color plate XVI.

A similar Hunsinger cabinet can be found in Christopher Payne's European Furniture of the 19th Century, page 254.

The firm of Hunsinger & Wagner is renowned for its marquetry utilizing fine and exotic timbers from around the world. Charles Hunsinger (1823-1893) began his business around 1859 as a fabricant de meubles de luxe et de fantaisie (maker of luxury furniture of fantasy). In December, 1872, he took on a partner, Charles-Adolphe-Frédéric Wagner, officially creating the firm of Hunsinger & Wagner. The partnership enjoyed many accolades during its decade-long existence, exhibiting at the Expositions Universelles of 1865, 1867, 1878 and 1889. He was awarded the gold medal at the Brussels Exhibition of 1881 and a médaille de progrès et de mérite at the exhibition of Vienna.
