Claude Monet is, without doubt, one of the most important artists of all time. Created during a formative period in his early career, Étude d'un bateau offers an intimate glimpse into the extraordinary depth of his artistic genius. Monet masterfully captures every detail of a paddle steamer and a small sailboat in the distance, both gliding on tranquil waters. The subtlety and delicate handling of this drawing reveal the same exceptional sensitivity to light and atmosphere that would define Monet's style.
The drawing originates from a pivotal moment in Monet’s life. Created circa 1857, Monet rejected the academic discipline of his art instruction, and instead, he spent his days drawing in the harbor or on the cliffs. His early drawings drew attention in his native Le Havre, where the esteemed Eugène Boudin soon recognized his talent. Boudin took the young artist under his wing, encouraging Monet to move beyond drawing and pursue painting en plein air.
Such extraordinary early Monet drawings are highly rare, as most remained in the artist's studio until his death and subsequently passed through family hands. This wonderful artwork was originally owned by the artist's son, Michel Monet. Similar Monet drawings can be found in the world's most prestigious institutions, including the Musée d'Orsay, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Harvard Art Museums.
The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Wildenstein Plattner Institute and will be included in their forthcoming digital catalogue raisonné.
