An accompanying handwritten note attests that it was a gift from Emperor Alexander II of Russia to General Guillaume Henri Dufour. A celebrated Swiss military leader and structural engineer, Dufour played a critical role in the founding of the International Red Cross and chaired the First Geneva Convention in 1864. August Frederik Hollming was a master artisan at Fabergé's St. Petersburg workshop between 1898 and 1908, renowned for his ability to transform the firm's visionary designs into extraordinary creations. Hollming specialized in crafting gem-set and enameled jewels, miniature Easter eggs and luxurious objects such as cigarette cases.
