A rare and visually dynamic example of late 19th-century French bronze sculpture, Fisher Boy by Marcel Début captures a young fisherman mid-action, caught in the moment of triumph as he hauls in his catch with a net. Modeled with lifelike details and expressive movement, this work displays all the hallmarks of Début’s refined technique, classical training and his Art Nouveau sensibility. The composition showcases the boy in an exaggerated contrapposto stance, one leg resting on a rock, the other bearing weight as he leans into the motion of the net. This is a work not only of technical mastery but also of great charm and narrative detail.
Marcel Début, son of the celebrated sculptor Jean Didier Début, was one of the most respected figures of the French academic and decorative arts circles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts under Henri Chapu, he began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1883, showing works nearly every year until World War I. Known for both his sculpture and painting, he portrayed a wide array of subjects—from mythological heroes and historic figures to rustic scenes of daily life. His works were collected in his time and remain admired today for their artistry and elegance.
