Meticulously crafted of mahogany with satinwood and ebony inlays and equipped with several locked compartments and a hidden safe, this handsome desk would have belonged to an important British general. Every element of this desk perfectly marries elegance with practicality, reflecting the wealth and influence of the powerful British Empire. Lined with original gilt-tooled leather for a smooth writing surface, the interior also features cleverly designed compartments for a range of items, including a brass scale, books and documents, a clock, portraits of King George V and the Queen Consort and crystal glasses. Below the étagère, two drawers open to reveal a set of crystal decanters in each, along with a fully functional safe hidden behind a mirror. Designed for easy disassembly and troop portability, the étagère also can be detached, enabling ease of movement from various battle fronts in a campaign.
The expansion of the British Empire during the 18th and 19th centuries resulted in the production of campaign furnishings that proved to be stylish, practical and some of the most fascinating pieces ever created.
