Hallmarked London, 1787

This elegant Georgian brandy saucepan by the skilled silversmith William Bulford features a unique engraving of the Montgomery family crest, accompanied by their motto, "Patriae infelici fidelis," which pledges loyalty to their country. As a prominent noble family with roots in both Britain and France, the Montgomerys were reputed for their high status, as well as their relation to William the Conqueror. Renowned as one of the wealthiest families in England and Normandy, their collection consisted of only the finest silverware.

The saucepan is a small vessel of circular, bulbous baluster form that bulges towards the bottom. Crafted to a classic design, it includes a fine wooden handle and finial, which enhances its overall aesthetic and functionality. The pan was intended to warm anything from butter and sauces to brandy and mulling wine, showcasing its versatility in the 18th-century kitchen. The smooth, polished silver surface and graceful curves make it a quintessential example of Georgian-era silver craftsmanship. Additionally, this saucepan was a part of the iconic Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
