Hallmarked London, 1780
This remarkable neoclassical silver mazarine exemplifies the refined elegance and functionality of Georgian silverware made by Stephen Gilbert and Andrew Fogelberg, the latter of whom was the mentor to the illustrious Paul Storr. Designed to elevate meat or fish above its juices in an opulent dining display, this oval insert features a slightly raised rim, a unique departure from the standard flat design. Its triple rows of circular piercings encircle a central crest, echoing the plain oval rim, while patterns of scrolling and trefoils fill the center.
The centerpiece of the mazarine is its engraved arms, depicting a wheat garb surmounted by a baronial coronet, representing Richard Grosvenor, 1st Earl Grosvenor. Baron Grosvenor since 1761 and elevated to Earl in 1784, Grosvenor was a key political figure during the 1770s, lending his support to Lord North during the American War of Independence. The combination of his crest and the craftsmanship of the item ties it to an era of both elegance and historical significance.
This mazarine bears the marks of Andrew Fogelberg and Stephen Gilbert, renowned London silversmiths. Fogelberg was celebrated for his neoclassical style marked by elegance, crafting silver for noble families such as this very fine example. Fogelberg was a leading figure in silver design, later taking Paul Storr as an apprentice. Additionally, this mazarine was a part of the prestigious Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
