This exceptional silver porringer, or bleeding bowl, epitomizes both functional and aesthetic Georgian craftsmanship. The round bowl features an inset rim and a gracefully applied, pierced handle adorned with a scrolling motif. Historically, such shallow bowls with a single, flat handle were known interchangeably as bleeding bowls or porringers on both sides of the Atlantic. They were used for measuring and serving food, with pewter versions also widely used.. . .

The bowl's historical significance is underscored by its inscription: “The Gift of In(o) [John] Allanson to His Grandson Tho(s) Simpson, Jan(y) 21, 1800,” alongside the engraved initials “JA” on the handle. This elegant dedication not only reflects the important role it served but also its enduring legacy as a treasured family heirloom. Additionally, this porringer was a part of the prestigious Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
