Trained in Scotland, Turnbull created light and functional silhouettes like this one that were unique because of their exquisite craftsmanship and special timbers. This masterful table incorporates an astonishing sample of rare woods, including Brazilian Tulipwood, Coconut Wood, Bitternut, Palm, Fustic, Greenheart, Purpleheart, and Bulletwood. Turnbull's furniture garnered widespread acclaim and was highly coveted in Europe for its ingenious use of materials found nowhere else in the world.
Ralph Turnbull and his brothers emigrated to Jamaica in the early 19th century, establishing themselves as the leading furniture makers of this region. By the 1820s, Ralph was working independently as the most successful of the brothers, and his furniture was in high demand among English merchants and officials eager to return to Europe with unique treasures. The Turnbull aesthetic of lavish veneers and delicate marquetry is instantly recognizable and still today one of the most desirable antique furniture styles.
