Glass and Enamel Parrot Ewer
Moser
Late 19th Century

This stunning Moser pitcher embodies the pinnacle of Bohemian art glass. Ewers are among the most exciting creations by this world-renowned firm, as they were often the vehicles for many of Moser’s most inventive and elaborate designs. This particular example is extraordinary for its grand scale and its mesmerizingly beautiful decoration that covers the entirety of the ewer, elevating it among the finest of Moser's exceptional glassworks.

The magnificent electric blue glass of the ewer's body is adorned with a colorful array of hand-painted enamel oak leaves and the iconic relief-molded silvered acorns, along with delicate gilding that extends to its handle, lip and base. A majestic golden parrot forms the center of the opulent design, with its shimmering wings spread and beak open in animated speech. Highly detailed and fantastically captivating, this ewer showcases the extraordinary artistry for which Moser was famed.

Encouraged by the Austro-Hungarian Governments, Ludvik Moser quickly excelled as a glass artist while completing an apprenticeship under accomplished artist O.J. Mattoni. Through working with the Health Spa at Karlsbad, producing and decorating glassware to serve the healing waters found at the spa, Moser quickly acquired a following and demand for his work. By 1857, Moser was able to open his shop full of bright, glistening glass creations. Moser quickly acquired global nobility as his clientele and began displaying his work at exhibitions around the world, earning the moniker "Glass of Kings." Some of his well-known patrons include Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, Pope Pius XI and King Farouk of Egypt.
