Oil on canvas
The famed neon NASDAQ sign lights up Times Square in this oil on canvas by the American painter Marcia Gaylor. The work is masterfully composed, highlighting the legendary financial institution as a symbol of American investment and patriotic pride. The presence of the American flag on the famed NASDAQ MarketSite building blazes in the darkness of the New York night, animating the hustle and bustle of the streets and commerce that surrounds it. Part of Gaylor's Wall Street series, the composition pays homage not only to NASDAQ, but American financial culture as a whole.
As the world’s largest electronic exchange company, NASDAQ owns and operates 26 markets (equities, options, derivatives, fixed income and commodities), with clearinghouses and securities depositories spanning six continents. Worldwide, 70 exchanges in 50 countries trust NASDAQ trading technology to power their markets, providing liquidity and driving growth in emerging and developed economies. Gaylor's work is a tribute to the American financial innovation that NASDAQ represents.
Based in southern California, Marcia Gaylor is renowned for her historical scenes that capture the New York City and Chicago stock market trading floors and vibrant financial districts. Before pursuing painting as a career, she earned an MBA from the University of Southern California, and her financial background clearly influenced the direction of her art later in her life. Most of her paintings focus on the economic history of the United States as she captures the financial heart of the country's largest cities. The result is a body of work that stands in colorful tribute to the economy and the power of capital. Today, she remains an active member of the California Art Club, Oil Painters of America, Women Painters of America, as well as the American Impressionist Society.
