Executed during the artist’s pivotal Nice period, Nude with Shadow is an exceptional example of Henri Matisse’s mastery of line, rhythm and form. Drawn in 1927, this sensuous and concise rendering of the female figure distills Matisse’s revolutionary artistic philosophy into its most essential visual language.
Rendered in an elegantly fluid line, the nude figure, Matisse’s most revered and favored muse, reclines in profile. Her arms are resting behind her head, and her knees are gently bent. Matisse makes deliberate choices in what to reveal and what to abstract, conveying the fullness of form with sparing marks. Beneath the bold ink outline, an echo of the same pose appears in pencil, the “shadow” referenced in the title. The sitter’s pose, inspired by Michelangelo’s Night, became an enduring subject for Matisse across media, from drawing and painting to sculpture and print.
Throughout his long career, Matisse returned again and again to the female nude as a well of artistic experimentation. By 1917, he had relocated to the Mediterranean city of Nice, where light and leisure informed a more sensual and luminous style. There, he honed a vibrant palette and simplified contour lines, influenced by both classical tradition and the decorative arts. The 1920s and 1930s marked a particularly fertile period for his explorations of the reclining odalisque figure. Masterful drawings similar to Nude with Shadow are held in the world's leading institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Musée Matisse in Nice.
