This Pagoda Cameo glass lamp is a highly rare and coveted example of Émile Gallé's mastery of glassmaking. Layers of vibrant color, from golden yellows to mauve, radiate from a background of elegantly frosted blue-green glass to form the scene of an Eastern-style pagoda. Gallé was inspired by the natural world and Japanese motifs, and this lamp demonstrates the popularity of East Asian design among Art Nouveau makers. Uncertain about the staying power of electricity at the turn of the century, he produced relatively few of these lamps, making surviving examples such as this quite scarce.

Considered one of the pioneers of Art Nouveau, Gallé was renowned for his naturalistic glass artistry. His titanic career had humble beginnings when he first began experimenting with marquetry and naturalistic glass designs from his small workshop in 1885. In 1889, he displayed his new glass creations at the Paris International Exhibition, and both his designs and colors caused an immediate sensation. Considered one of the pioneers of the Art Nouveau style, Gallé's legendary success at the Exposition Universelle of 1900 catapulted him to monumental fame.
